• Concerns raised after residents warned of instances of dangerous driving near schools

A spokesman for the force said the offensive had been initiated following concerns from members of the local community about the standard of driving in the area, including speeding and failing to obey red lights and was being focused around Queen’s Road near St Joseph’s RC Primary and Albyn School.

Sergeant Ian Davidson, who is leading the operation, said: “As a direct result of concerns raised by members of our local community regarding inappropriate driving, it was felt the start of the academic year was an ideal time to remind motorists of the need to take extra care when travelling near school buildings.

“A lot of young pupils walk to school, and it’s vital that they are able to do so safely. Local residents have voiced some concerns to us about the nature of driving in the area, particularly drivers exceeding the speed limit and failing to stop at red lights.

“Our operation will target the areas outside schools at peak times over the next four days, and offer not only enforcement but education to motorists caught driving inappropriately.”

He added: “Everyone has a duty to ensure that our young people are able to walk to and from school safely, and there is a responsibility on every driver or rider to ensure they abide by the highway code and traffic laws.

“Anyone found to be committing an offence will be dealt with robustly, as the safety of our children is of paramount importance.”

Catherine Tominey, the head teacher of St Joseph’s School, welcomed the initiative. She said: “It is imperative that drivers remember to adhere to the highway code particularly near and around schools, as children making their way to and from school may not be thinking about getting there and home safely.”
