Mountain rescue crews searching for an elderly man who went missing on a Munro have recovered a body.

The 75-year-old became separated from his group on Ben Cruachan, in Argyll, and was reported overdue at about 9:30pm on Saturday.

Search teams, two helicopters and dogs were involved in the search around the 3,694ft Munro, near Loch Awe, which was called off at about 4:30am.

More teams resumed looking for the man around 7am yesterday and found his body in a
ravine off the main path.

Strathclyde Police said
family members were still being informed and the man could not yet be formally named.

Ross Lilley, deputy team leader of Oban Mountain Rescue, said the man had been descending the path from the summit towards the A85 and Falls of Cruachan rail station when he became separated from those he was with.

The other members of his group went back up to look for him before calling police for
assistance.

Mr Lilley said the section of the path is close to the base of the Munro, but it was very steep. He added: “We were searching
either side of the main path,
just at a point where it enters woodland and quite thick
bracken.

“It is quite difficult to search because it’s so steep and heavily vegetated.”

The rescue helicopter from HMS Gannett, in Prestwick, was called in initially, followed by the police helicopter to try to pick up a heat signature, but without success. Four dogs were also used to pick up a scent.

Yesterday morning, Arrochar Mountain Rescue and more
police resumed the search.

Mr Lilley added: “The path runs close to quite a steep-sided ravine. In the dark, it’s quite easy to stray off. It’s so easy when you’re descending and accidents can happen, particularly on a steep path.”

Nearby hotels and B&Bs around the base of Ben Cruachan said the man and his group were not local. One owner, who asked not to be named, said he understood the group were on a day trip from Glasgow.

Further north, two climbers were injured in an incident near Loch Muick in Aberdeenshire.

Grampian Police received reports of climbers injured by a rockfall in a gully at Eagle Ridge, Lochnagar, at around 12:30pm yesterday.

Two men of a party of four were injured in the rockfall. They are believed to have leg injuries, possibly involving
fractures.

A full mountain rescue call was initiated with teams dispatched to provide assistance to the people involved.
