GENIUS Foods, the Edinburgh-based gluten-free specialist, is stepping up its push into Europe by selling croissants and pain du chocolat – to a French firm.
Carrefour, the supermarket giant, will stock the pastries among ten of the Scottish firm’s products in its Spanish stores. Genius struck a deal to supply Carrefour stores with bread and pizza in March, but the addition of a much wider range of products is a coup for the company as it looks to become one of the leading gluten-free food producers in Europe.
Its pizza and bread are sold in 320 Carrefour stores in Spain, while its other products will be available in larger hypermarket outlets.
Roz Cuschieri, chief executive, said: “The extended deal with Carrefour is another valuable stepping stone for us as we strive to become a household name in the European gluten-free market. The growth opportunities for us in Europe are enormous.”
All the Genius products will be manufactured in the UK and exported to Spain.
Genius products are already stocked in all major UK supermarkets and large independent stores. The company has more than a 50 per cent share of the UK gluten-free bread market.
Lucinda Bryce-Gardyne, a professionally trained chef, developed Genius bread after failing to find quality gluten-free and wheat-free bread suitable for her gluten intolerant son.
