Buccleuch Property has been given the go ahead to build a major residential and hotel development on the former Tyne Tees Television site in Newcastle.

Student accommodation on the site, which was home to hit music series The Tube, will be developed and operated by U-Student Group.

Edinburgh-based Buccleuch Property said it was working jointly with Carlisle-based company Northern Developments on the project. Detailed planning consent has been secured for a 386-bed student housing development, alongside outline consent for 30 residential apartments and a 139-bed hotel.

Sandy Smith, development director for Buccleuch, said: “The former Tyne Tees Television site is an extremely attractive location and indeed we were approached by a number of developers looking to work with us on this scheme.

“Northern Developments was the first developer that we felt could really deliver on the site and we are enjoying a successful working relationship.

“Our combined investment in the wider scheme will provide significant economic regeneration, not just on the site, but for the wider city.”

U-Student expect works to commence on the “student village” early in 2013 and said it was currently reviewing and finalising detailed design with Northern Developments.

It added: “We have significant expansion plans and this development will be the first site to open in the next phase of growth, with sites in Edinburgh, Liverpool and Manchester all under negotiation/early planning.”
