HEALTH Secretary Alex Neil has confirmed that plans to build a replacement for Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Department of Clinical Neurosciences have been approved.
Plans to move the hospital from its present site to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary at Little France were developed in 2005, but later shelved. The new hospital had been slated to open next year
The Sick Kids hospital opened in 1860, and moved to its current Sciennes Road site in 1895, with the building designed by George Washington Browne.
It provides care for children between birth and 13 years of age, and has its own specialist Accident and Emergency department.
The Health Secretary also confirmed the Scottish Government’s commitment to investing over £1 billion in NHS Scotland capital projects over the next two years, including £485 million to be invested over 2013-2014.
