VAN drivers in Scotland have the highest conviction rate in the UK for using mobile phones behind the wheel, which is also six times the rate for car drivers, according to research by the AA published today.
A total of 3.4 per cent of van drivers north of the Border were convicted of the offence in the last five years, compared to 2.4 per cent across the UK.
By comparison, 0.5 per cent of car drivers in Scotland had convictions in the same period.
Van drivers in Scotland were also second only to those in London for convictions for all driving offences, at 17.2 per cent - compared to 7 per cent of car drivers.
The figures were compiled from AA Insurance policyholders.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance says: “The significantly higher number of van drivers’ offences is astonishing, but is perhaps down to the pressure to get between jobs and keep customers informed.”
