Talk of the Town: Bin men were only taking the fish

IMAGINE the excitement among residents in Trafalgar Lane – where rubbish had been piling up for almost three weeks – in Bonnington on Tuesday when a bin lorry rolled into the street.

Indeed, the bin men did make collections. Sadly they were from the Gold Sea fish and chip shop in nearby Ferry Road as the sorely pressed workers re-fuelled before getting back to the task in hand.

Residents say no revised collection dates were sent to some addresses and no clear guidance has been offered.

The wait goes on.

Car dealership gets a Stirling endorsement

BACK when he was the fastest man on four wheels, Stirling Moss probably gave little thought to what he’d be doing come the year 2012.

But when he was standing atop the podium being declared Forumla One champion, he couldn’t have considered ever being referred to as a “brand endorsee”.

Now, the knight of the realm is just that, lending his backing to city motor dealership Longstone Cars of Edinburgh, which is offering a new package of car safety checks.

According to Sir Stirling, it’s the perfect place for a pit stop.

He says: “I often get approached to put my name to products and services but I knew this was something that was valuable for the consumer.”

Tea break is up in the air

A SPECIAL treat is on offer for big-hearted coffee lovers travelling through Edinburgh Airport tomorrow.

Loganair is getting involved in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning being run by Macmillan Cancer Support by dishing out hot drinks and cakes on all its flights in and out of the Capital.

Phil Preston, chief operations officer of Loganair, said: “The coffee morning is such a great idea and what better way for us to be involved than to take it into the air, giving our Edinburgh passengers a complimentary refreshment while raising funds.”

Sounds not so much the mile-high club, but more the milk-high club.

City workers plan ahead

IT seems this is a city always thinking about the long-term future . . . and we’re not just talking about the trams.

A new survey reveals that more workers in the Capital are saving for their retirement than in any other UK city, with canny staff here putting an average 13 per cent of their salaries in the biscuit tin.

It always pays to be ready for a rainy day – since we’ve no doubt got many of them ahead.
