Civil Service union warns of ‘attack’

A TRADE union has warned of a “fundamental rupture” in industrial relations in the civil service amid plans to review terms and conditions of staff.

In particular, the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union warned of a “political attack” by the government over moves to cut the amount of time civil servants can spend on union activity.

The PCS revealed a document sent to departmental directors of human resources making it clear that all terms, conditions, policies and agreements are to be looked at, including working hours, annual leave, sick pay and arrangements such as childcare, flexitime and job sharing. “It is not acceptable that we and they are left to learn of their employer’s decision through newspapers and statements at the Conservative Party conference,” Hugh Lanning, the PCS’s deputy general secretary, said.
