FROM same-sex marriage to the future of the United Kingdom, the various definitions of union have been in the news lately. Acts of union are also at the heart of many events taking place under the umbrella of this year’s Glasgay!

Among the performances is Any Objections? a series of ten-minute readings taking place each evening at Rose and Grant’s cafe on the Trongate. From full legal status to the total denial of homosexuality, each piece looks at what marriage equality means around the world.

On a lighter note, this evening Glasgow Film Theatre is showing Mommie Dearest, the 1981 Joan Crawford biopic. Originally panned for its poor performances, the film has had a more positive critical re-appraisal of late. At least these days, the audience are less likely to bring along coat hangers in order to ham along to one of the film’s more memorable scenes.

Rick Astley and Hue and Cry both play Scotland this weekend with Astley popping up at Glasgow’s Oran Mor tomorrow evening while the Kane brothers are at Hamilton Townhouse this evening and Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall on Sunday. Apart from the fact that all three had their biggest hits in 1987, they have little in common apart from the extraordinary length of their careers. Hue and Cry are particularly interesting in that, while still producing new albums, they have offered their fanbase new ways to experience their concerts. These gigs offer a VIP platinum package which involves extras such as access to the soundcheck, an additional piano and vocal performance plus a meet and greet.

Moving from the turmoil of the city to the serenity of the polar regions, wildlife photographer, cameraman and explorer Doug Allan is talking about his adventures this weekend. If you have ever watched Frozen Planet, Blue Planet or Planet Earth then you will have seen his work.

At the Universal Hall in Findhorn tonight and Aberdeen Arts Centre tomorrow, Allan will recall close encounters with wild creatures such as walruses, polar bears and the magnificent Attenborough.
