Working out before breakfast burns more fat than excercising later in the day find Scottish scientists

EXERCISING before breakfast is better for you than exercising afterwards according to new research by scientists at Glasgow University.

The study found the timing of exercise impacted on the rate fat is burned over the day and on metabolism.

The team concluded exercise before breakfast resulted in greater fat loss and larger reductions in the level of fat in the blood.

Dr Jason Gill of the university’s Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences said: “Any exercise you do is beneficial, but the indications are that there might be an extra benefit associated with exercising before eating, compared to after.

Ten overweight men who were not regular exercisers took part in the study with each taking part in three trials several weeks apart. This involved them performing no exercise then eating breakfast, walking briskly for 60 minutes before eating breakfast and doing the same walk after eating breakfast.

The study appears in the latest edition of the British Journal of Nutrition.
