University of St Andrews students, who were celebrating Raisin Weekend, have they saved an elderly woman from drowning in the North Sea.

The group of seven from the Fife inistution had been celebrating the end of Raisin Weekend, when students play practical jokes, on a beach when they noticed the pensioner in trouble.

She had been spotted floating in the water near the end of an old pier.

Without a seconds thought, the students - one a talented swimmer and others trainee medics - put their skills into practice and quickly jumped into the freezing North Sea to rescue the woman.

First year Hannah Cope, a member of the university’s swimming team, reached the 75-year-old first and dragged her to the shore.

Miss Cope, from New York, said: “We wrapped her up with towels and warm clothes as best we could.

“The paramedics arrived and worked on her for quite a while until they had stabilised her condition. Then they took her away to hospital.

“We’ve all been thinking about her and wondering how she is and hoping that she is OK.

“Our thoughts are with her and her husband.”
