A BODY was discovered early today on the roof of the city council headquarters at Waverley Court in Market Street.

Police said they had been called to the building at around 8am after a man’s body was found on the grassed area of the roof.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: “Police were called to Waverley Court, after the body of a man was discovered in a garden area at the rear of the building. Inquiries are at a very early stage, and officers are working to establish the circumstances of the man’s death.”

A council spokeswoman said: “We are aware of an incident that took place at Waverley Court this morning and will assist the police with their enquiries.”

Almost 1800 staff work at Waverley Court. The first workers moved into the building next to Waverley Station in December 2006. Shaped like a giant letter E, and made mostly of concrete and glass, it has its main entrance on East Market Street and replaced 20 run-down council offices around the city. It was officially opened by the Princess Royal in April 2007.
