What we’re looking forward to in arts and entertainment this week
Theatre
Edinburgh’s is not the only Fringe opening this weekend. Celebrating its fifth year, North Berwick’s Fringe By The Sea offers almost 70 perfomances spanning literature, music, and most things in between. Guests include novelists Iain Banks and Sara Sheridan, and there are musical perfomances by Kate Rusby, Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain, and The Manfreds, who are now celebrating over 50 years in the music industry. With the festival’s seaside backdrop, it also offers a calming alternative to the chaos of Edinburgh.

Art
This weekend sees the opening
of Particle – Things Unseen by Orkney artist Anne Bevan at Shetland Arts. Working with
media including sculpture and video installation, Bevan has created a show inspired by
the ocean and science, with accompanying contributions from the poets Jen Hadfield and Alan Spence, amongst others. The show continues until 16 September.

Festival
Patricia Hodges, star of Rumpole of the Bailey, has found a whole new audience recently as the interfering mother in TV sitcom Miranda. This week, though, the English actress is at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal in a revival of Dandy Dick, alongside Olivier nominated Nicholas Le Prevost. The rarely performed Victorian comedy centres around the antics of a respectable Reverend and the chatoic consequence of a visit from his mischievous sister. It opens on Tuesday.

Music
Piping Live returns to venues across Glasgow from tomorrow until 12 August. This year, there is an interesting mix of contemporary and traditional performances from the likes of popular and vibrant folk band Breabach and Major Gavin Stoddard, who received an MBE for his services to army piping. The festival builds up to the Pipe Band Championships on Saturday with more than 8000 pipers from around the world.
