Scottish word of the week: Bunnet

$
0
0

A word that dates back several centuries, a bunnet is most commonly known as a flat, brimless hat for men (although it did, at one time, refer to a woman’s hat as well, as Robert Burns’ ‘To A Louse’ attests).

The bunnet has survived and thrived in Scottish culture since the 14th century, where its first recorded usage was found.

Much more than a piece of headgear, the bunnet was, for a long time, a signifier of social status. It has also been an integral part of Scottish infantry uniform. Its wide application in Scottish civil and military society has prolonged its presence atop the heads of working men, armed forces personnel and fashionistas alike.

But the bunnet’s heritage is most closely linked with the working class - the expression ‘bunnet hustler’ is given to a relatively well-off individual who talks up their working class roots, real or imagined.

Examples of the bunnet’s prominence in popular culture isn’t limited to fashion - a natural landmark near Gateside, Fife that hangs precariously over a cliff is christened The Bunnet Stane.

A more obscure example was narrated by none other than Sir Sean Connery - a documentary that he directed and presented called The Bowler and the Bunnet, a serious-minded affair that examined working class culture in a Glasgow shipyard in the 1960s. The title, pointedly, referred to how managers would wear bowler hats, and the workers would wear bunnets, reinforcing the hat as a signifier of social status at the time.

Baconface heads up Alternative Comedy Experience

A RATINGS and critical success for Comedy Central, The Alternative Comedy Experience returns to Edinburgh’s Stand Comedy Club next week to shoot its second series with an expanded, even more eclectic line-up of leftfield comedians.

Unlikely to be seen on slickly edited “shiny floor showcases” like Live At The Apollo anytime soon, the acts are variously described as “interesting”, “slightly different” and “weird” by the show’s curator and executive producer Stewart Lee, who maintains that ACE is “the best stand-up series that has ever been on television anywhere in the world!”

Added to the ranks of explicitly political comics like Josie Long and Andy Zaltzman are the staunchly left-wing Grainne Maguire, libertarian, instinctive contrarian Liam Mullone and the uncompromising, anti-consumerist Alfie Brown. Joining oddballs Paul Foot and Bridget Christie is headcase Lou Sanders, while the combustible Michael Legge, literate geek Nish Kumar and science nerds Helen Arne and Helen Keen are also among the newcomers. Scots David Kay and Stephen Carlin were two of the first series’ breakout stars. And the homegrown talent has been swelled by regular Stand compère Susan Calman and the relatively inexperienced Fern Brady, a smart, fiercely opinionated young act whom Lee recruited on the basis of a single YouTube clip.

Although there was no quota, Lee highlights the number of female comics, comparing it favourably to other stand-up showcases “where there’s a general absence of women, it’s almost a monoculture”. There’s also a liberal sprinkling of “new” veterans alongside firm Fringe favourites Tony Law, David O’Doherty, Robin Ince and Simon Munnery, such as the multi-talented, multi-faceted Kevin Eldon, seldom filmed, early stand-up pioneers John Hegley and Hattie Hayridge, plus Lee’s hero Kevin McAleer.

A near-mythical slide routine on 1980s showcase Friday Night Live notwithstanding, the singular Irishman has never performed stand-up for UK television before and Lee enthuses: “I can’t wait to see how that will cut up. I’ve never laughed at anything as much as I have at him.”

Yet even McAleer isn’t the most alternative act appearing. The Scotsman can exclusively reveal that although Lee is once again restricting himself to interviewing the other comics backstage, Canadian stand-up Baconface, programme associate on his forthcoming BBC Two series Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle, will deliver a special midnight show on Friday 12 July. Details of how to obtain tickets will be released at the earlier recordings.

Virtually nothing is known about this enigmatic, gruffly spoken native of British Columbia, who performs in a Mexican wrestler’s mask draped in bacon and routinely employs the catchphrase “It’s all bacon!” Yet Baconface has criticised Lee for “exploiting his obscurity” to afford him “credibility as an artist”. Lee will only confess to “anxiety” from Comedy Central and the BBC about putting this bizarre character on screen.

Fairness and planning can drive dairy sector

Fair contracts which give farmers confidence to invest in milk production and increase efficiencies will put British dairying in prime position to become an international success story, according to the English NFU.

In its vision document for the future of British dairying, the NFU said the industry had a bright future, provided opportunities for growth equivalent to four to five billions litres per annum were seized.

The strategy was unveiled this week at the Livestock Event in Birmingham where the union claimed British dairying could be at the forefront of dairy production, if the industry worked together.

Urging producers, processors and retailers to work towards more equitable contractual relationships, it says a competitive supply chain would give the industry the confidence and ability to invest and make efficiencies.

The document, Compete to Grow, describes the UK as having an “already efficient, but potentially highly efficient dairy farm base”.

If farmers were paid a market price that enabled them to make on-going investment of 3.5p per litre, then farm expansion, efficiency gains and new entrants to the industry could allow output to expand to the required levels, it adds.

Mansel Raymond, chairman of the NFU dairy board, said growing global populations and demand for dairy products meant he was confident British dairying had a bright future, provided the industry worked together.

“Over the past ten years, milk production in Britain has been in a continuing decline which is no good for consumers, retailers, processors or dairy farmers,” he said. “With joined-up thinking, there’s no reason why we can’t turn around the decline and move forward.

“We have been 2-3p per litre behind our European colleagues and that money is money for investment, [the lack of which] has held us back from being efficient.”

But Raymond warned that growth at the farmgate would only happen in conjunction with increased processing capacity.

“While much has been said about investment in liquid milk processing, growth will also require more state-of-the-art processing capacity for other dairy products,” he said.

The launch of the NFU’s document came as the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers said the prospects for UK milk producers looked brighter over the next couple of years.

Its chairman, Ian Macalpine, admitted the past 12 months had been challenging for producers, but he had optimism for growth within the industry.

“All the signals are that the world market should give the industry an opportunity to thrive in the future and we are enthusiastic and optimistic about the future.”

Comment: Carney makes mark with steady hand

SELDOM has a Bank of England meeting recommending no change in policy produced such an emphatic reaction.

The arrival of Mark Carney as the new governor was always likely to draw extra attention to the monthly session of the monetary policy committee (MPC), but even he could not have expected such a response.

The FTSE 100 enjoyed its biggest one-day rise of the year, while sterling and the euro fell, both reacting to the commitment of the MPC and the European Central Bank to maintain a loose and dovish monetary policy.

In what looked like a co-ordinated measure, both took the unprecedented decision to issue statements and the markets responded positively to the longer-term outlook provided. It now appears that interest rates will not move upwards, contrary to some expectations, any time soon.

The ECB termed its note “forward guidance” while the Bank of England is expected to formalise its statements in a similar fashion after future meetings.

It also seems that quantitative easing (QE) will not be withdrawn and could be fuelled with another injection of money next month if the green shoots fail to push through. However, there is now talk of forward guidance reducing the likelihood of more QE as the economy improves.

Chancellor George Osborne will now be looking to the Bank to help stimulate growth and create enough jobs to bring the unemployment rate closer to a manageable level.

He, in turn, will need to ease off a little on the austerity drive in order to avoid suffocating any nascent recovery through lack of demand and confidence.

Buy now, a new car may never be such a bargain

AUSTERITY Britain does not seem to have touched the nation’s car buying public or the dealers, for that matter. New car sales, particularly among private buyers, continue to rise, particularly in Scotland, and are providing a boost for manufacturers.

It is not simply that car buyers have more buying power than anyone else, or that consumers are putting a new motor at the top of their shopping lists.

But it does suggest a number of factors at work: some healthy discounts and deals that help to keep volumes up; consumers looking to a new car as a feelgood purchase during generally gloomy times; and buyers coming into the market having held on to their previous model for a little longer than usual until confidence returns.

Motorists are being drawn to more fuel-efficient models in an attempt to combat high prices at the pumps and by vehicles that require less maintenance.

But as the economy continues to recover, prices may rise and the deals will tail off. Now is probably a good time to get down to the showroom.

Brewing pair with a thirst for big things

IT WAS about five years ago that I first met James Watt and Martin Dickie, founders of the maverick brewing firm BrewDog. They were unknown start-up entrepreneurs who had just picked up an award for their fledgling Fraserburgh business.

But even then they showed no signs of shyness and talked about building Scotland’s biggest brewing company. I admit I was sceptical, but the company has made a name for itself, helped by shock marketing tactics which have paid off with solid year-end figures that can only go in one direction.

Lux Assure expands with ex-Petrofac director

A CHEMICALS detection firm in which energy giants ConocoPhillips and Statoil bought stakes earlier this year is expanding into Aberdeen and has picked a senior oil industry figure as its first chief executive.

Charles Cruickshank, a former business development director at FTSE 100 energy services giant Petrofac, will help to turn Edinburgh-based Lux Assure from a research and development (R&D) outfit into a services provider.

ConocoPhillips and Statoil pumped £3.25 million into the company in February alongside Archangel Informal Investments and the Scottish Investment Bank (SIB).

Cruickshank has spent 27 years in the oil and gas industry, most recently with Petrofac’s engineering consultancy services business and previously with subsea specialist Flexlife, where he helped the firm to start working abroad.

Emma Perfect, managing director and chief scientific officer at Lux Assure, told The Scotsman: “Charles has many years’ experience in oil and gas sales and services on the integrity side of the industry, which is a fairly hot topic because of lots of leaks and other issues.

“He brings all that experience that we need to grow the business and transform ourselves into a service company. He will also help us to expand overseas.”

Cruickshank added: “This is a very busy and exciting time for Lux and I’m delighted to be on board to help drive the company forward and be part of its ambitious plans.”

Cruickshank will split his time between Lux Assure’s Aberdeen and Edinburgh offices. The company’s headcount is expected to double to 12 over the course of the next year, with at least three posts being created in Aberdeen.

Founded in 2001 as Lux Biotechnology, the company has in the past adapted life sciences testing methods for use in a variety of fields.

Lux Assure decided to focus solely on the oil and gas industry in 2009 and since then has received £800,000 in two rounds of backing from Archangels and SIB, which runs Scottish Enterprise’s Scottish Venture Fund.

Perfect said that the company had grown its turnover to £135,325 in the year to 31 May, 2012, from £109,962 in the previous 12 months.

The firm received R&D tax credits worth a “six-figure sum” over a number of years, which Perfect said had helped “give us a fighting chance to get to the point we find ourselves in today”.

Barbara McQuillan, a partner at accountancy firm Henderson Loggie, which helped Lux Assure secure the tax breaks, said: “A lot of people just associate R&D with lab coats, but it’s much wider than that. Engineering companies, manufacturing companies, farming businesses and any business that’s making an advance in science and technology to overcome a challenge can use them.”

BA first UK airline to take delivery of A380

A HUGE superjumbo flew into Heathrow airport yesterday as British Airways became the first UK airline to take delivery of an Airbus A380 – the world’s largest passenger plane.

Powered by Rolls-Royce engines and with its wings built in the UK, the double-decker aircraft will make its first commercial long-haul flight with BA to Los Angeles on 24 September, and its first flight to Hong Kong on 22 October.

Those travelling on the A380 will find a lot of room inside as BA is configuring it to take 469 passengers, slightly fewer than some of the other superjumbo-operating airlines.

There will be just 14 seats in first class, with customers seated at the front of the main deck. They will get 30 per cent more space than those in first on “normal” BA planes.

UK farm subsidies ‘poor value for money’

$

A LEADING researcher who yesterday claimed that billions of pounds of farm subsidies were being misspent also said he believed Scottish farming would benefit from future climate change.

Professor Ian Bateman of the University of East Anglia claimed that the British landscape was not being used to its best advantage under the present subsidy system and taxpayers were not getting the environmental benefits their support deserved.

He and his research looked at half a million land-use records and found that, at present, UK land use represented poor value for society relative to the subsidy level, which exceeds £3 billion a year.

But Bateman said believed a refocusing of payments could substantially improve the situation – and said the new common agricultural policy was “moving in the right direction.”

He stressed that he was not arguing for a reduction in the amount of money farmers received, saying: “There is a good case for subsidising farmers to produce the things we want which are not paid for though market prices. That includes better habitats for biodiversity, high quality recreation areas and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

“We looked ahead to 2060 and took into account other factors that may impact farming such as changing policies, environmental regulations, market forces, changes in farming technology and climate change; all of which could altering the growing season and amounts of rainfall.”

And he said that, if the temperature kept rising, Scotland would benefit, with farmers having more growing options while in the east of England higher temperatures and lower rainfall would restrict the range of crops.

Car sales expected to top 190,000 in 2013

$

INDUSTRY bosses have hiked their expectations for new car sales after private buyers continued to flock to showrooms last month.

The Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA) said it now expected sales north of the Border to top 190,000 for the year after an “excellent” first half. That would mark the strongest outcome since 2007, before the onset of the financial crisis.

The upgrade, from a previous forecast of 185,000 registrations, came as monthly figures revealed a 13.8 per cent rise in sales in June, compared to a year earlier. The UK-wide increase was 13.4 per cent.

Douglas Robertson, chief executive of the SMTA, said that private buyers were underpinning demand and accounted for more than 55 per cent of new car business last month.

“Scotland has always been more of a private buyers’ market than the rest of the UK and this is reflected in our 14.3 per cent increase over last year compared with the rest of the UK’s 9.6 per cent uplift,” added Robertson.

“Following this excellent first half of 2013 we wonder if, perhaps, we can now look at adjusting our original forecast.”

Sales totalled 18,999 units in June, with the Ford Fiesta the top-selling model, closely followed by the similarly-sized Vauxhall Corsa. The same Ford super-mini took top spot in the UK listing. There were just under 215,000 sales in the UK, marking the 16th consecutive month of growth, said the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT), which compiles the data.

Britain has been in the fast lane for some time with steady year-on-year gains contrasting with sharp falls across much of continental Europe. Buyers have been attracted by new, fuel-efficient models, finance deals and generous trade-in offers.

UK-wide registrations for the six months to 30 June increased by 10 per cent year-on-year to 1,163,623. The SMMT said there had now been six successive quarters of growth.

It is estimated that motorists switching to more fuel-efficient cars helped reduce average new car carbon dioxide emissions by 3.7 per cent on a year ago.

SMMT interim chief executive Mike Baunton said: “Boosted by consistently strong private demand and further growth in June, half-year new car registrations have topped the one million mark.

“June secured the 16th month of consecutive growth, a clear indicator that manufacturers and dealers are delivering desirable new products with tangible cost savings from the latest fuel-efficient technology coupled to a wide variety of competitive finance offers. While there are still potential challenges ahead, recent robust growth suggests that the market is on course to perform well ahead of 2012 levels.”

Howard Archer, chief UK economist at forecasting consultancy IHS Global Insight, said: “The motor industry will be hoping that the apparent recent improvement in UK economic activity is sustained and extended, and that this increasingly boosts consumer and business confidence, and their willingness to splash out on new cars.”

Shakeshaft drawn into legal claim

The trustees of a Scottish investment syndicate have raised a legal claim for more than £460,000 against former and current members of its board over the backing of a Dundee door manufacturer.

Symphony Equity Investments alleges that the defendants, including former Archangel chief executive Peter Shakeshaft, breached a restriction which said they could not invest more than
£1.1 million in a single company without obtaining written approval. The case in the Court of Session is before Lord Hodge who has asked the parties to consider his initial findings.

Low & Bonar points to rise in revenues

Low & Bonar said full-year revenues would rise to £400 million as it anticipates a recovery in the European construction market and a more favourable euro-to-pound exchange rate in the second half.

The industrial textiles and fibres maker, which has its roots in Dundee where it still has opeations, reported a 23 per cent fall in first-half profit due to an abnormally long winter that hurt sales in western Europe. The firm, whose products range from carpet backing yarns to fabrics used in construction, reported revenues of £380.5m last year.

Japanese contractor takes Xodus shares

PRIVATE equity firm Simmons and Dutch investor Sunrise have sold their stakes in Aberdeen-based energy consultancy Xodus Group to Japanese engineering contractor Chiyoda.

Xodus chief executive Colin Manson remained tight-lipped over how much Chiyoda had paid for its holding, but said that the departing shareholders had made a “healthy return” on their investments.

Simmons and Sunrise are believed to have paid about £13.5 million for their stakes in Xodus when they bought shares from John Lawrie Group and former Xodus director Richard Heard during 2010.

Manson told The Scotsman: “What’s exciting about this deal is the doors that this will open for us with the big Japanese oil companies, which all want to expand overseas.

“We’ll be able to advise them on which fields to invest in. In effect, we’ll become Chiyoda upstream oil and gas arm.”

Xodus is embarking on an overseas acquisition strategy after buying Dubai-based Prime Energy on Tuesday.

Manson added: “We’ve talked in the past about growing our headcount from about 600 at present to 1,500.

“But now I’m confident that we could grow to between 3,000 and 5,000 staff within the next five years.

“A lot of that growth will come from Africa, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East.”

Co-op’s Sutherland orders £1.5bn shortfall probe

$

THE CO-OPERATIVE Group launched an investigation yesterday into how its self-styled “ethical” bank ended up with a £1.5 billion hole in its balance sheet.

The mutual said it would shortly unveil a senior independent figure to lead the inquiry into its troubled acquisition of Britannia Building Society in 2009, and its abortive takeover of more than 600 Lloyds bank branches earlier this year.

Last month the Co-op Group disclosed plans to plug the shortfall by forcing bondholders to take a loss, or “haircut”, on their investment.

They include many small private investors who will be offered shares instead in a stock market listing of the Co-op Bank. Other businesses in the organisation, from funerals to groceries, will remain mutual.

New group chief executive Euan Sutherland, who succeeded Peter Marks two months ago, commissioned the inquiry, which will report to the annual general meeting next May.

Analysts say the shortfall in the banking arm’s capital buffers mainly stems from commercial property loans acquired through the merger with Britannia.

The building society’s sour loans formed the lion’s share of nearly £470 million of Co-op bad debt writedowns in 2012, which sent the banking arm £673.7m into the red.

Concerns over the Co-op Bank’s finances came to a head in May after credit ratings agency Moody’s downgraded its debt to “junk” status, just weeks after it pulled out of the deal to buy the Lloyds branches.

Former HSBC executive Niall Booker has been appointed to run the banking arm, which has also ceased new business lending, while the group’s insurance business is up for sale.
