YOUNG Scotland rugby player Mitchell Todd died after suffering a catastrophic brain injury in a car crash, an inquest has heard.

Assistant deputy coroner for Nottinghamshire Stephanie Haskey said the Under-20 international and Nottingham Rugby Club player could not have survived the severe head injuries he sustained in the crash.

The inquest heard the 21-year-old was found alone in a Citroen C3 on its roof in a field near Normanton-on-the-Wolds just before 6am on Wednesday by a member of the public.

The passer-by called for an ambulance but Mr Todd, from Nod Rise, Coventry, was confirmed dead at the Queen’s Medical Hospital in
Nottingham.

A postmortem examination confirmed Mr Todd died as a result of a catastrophic brain injury.

The player, who was born in Solihull, qualified for Scotland through his Edinburgh-born father and had also represented Scottish Exiles from under-17 to under-20 level. He won ten Scotland Under-20 caps and played in the IRB Junior World Championship.

A Scottish Rugby Union spokesman said: “Scottish Rugby extends its sincere condolences to all Mitchell Todd’s family and friends.”
