THE meeting between Sir Herbert Samuel and the deputation from the Executive of the National party of Scotland took place in the Central Station Hotel, Glasgow.

The primary object was to acquaint him, if he was not already aware, that an entirely new spirit had been born in Scotland so far as self-government was concerned. The National party was the living embodiment and the medium of expression of that spirit. Very deep feeling undoubtedly existed throughout Scotland that the leaders of the various political parties had “let her down”. Sir Herbert Samuel, rejoiced whole-heartedly that their movement was gaining in volume and force. Personally, he was in complete accord with its fundamental purposes. As thoughtful and sensible men and women, they did not suggest that there should be separation either from England or the Empire. The world should not be split up into hundreds of separate units.
