AN ISSUE of a limited number of steel helmets, gas masks and special armlets for ministers of religion in vulnerable areas who wish to be out on the streets during an air raid is to be made.

This was revealed at a meeting yesterday in Edinburgh of the Executive Committee of the Representative Church Council of the Episcopal Church in Scotland. Dean Mackay explained that intimation had been received from the Home Office offering the Churches steel helmets, gas masks and special armlets which would permit the clergy to be on the streets during a raid. “Many of us are of the opinion that we could be of use at such times. The Navy Army and Air Force Committee of the Church said we should avail ourselves of this concession. It is hardly fair, however, to ask the clergy to pay for their own things,” he said. Fifty-two clergymen were affected and the cost to the Church would be about £1 a head.
